14 Bad Habits that are Ruining Your Eyes

Itching or Rubbing Your Eyes
You have tiny blood vessels around your eyes. When you rub your eyes, you could break these blood vessels, resulting in dark circles, puffy eyes, crow’s feet, or drooping eyelids. Pulling and tugging on this area will quicken the aging process and could even lead to a need for Botox injections or eye surgery.
Not Blinking When Looking at a Screen
When you work on a computer or watch the TV, you may focus and let your eyes dry out before you blink. This also applies to reading small print on your smartphone. This bad habit puts strain on your eyes. Remember to blink every few seconds to keep your eyes moist. Take breaks from glaring at screens to relax your eyes and keep them healthy. Consider increasing the font size on your phone or taking breaks every 20 minutes.
Writing or Reading in Poor Lighting
Before you go to bed at night, you might like to read a book or write in a journal to unwind. However, if you don’t keep the room well lit, you may hurt your eyes. Make sure you have plenty of light whenever you read or write to avoid straining your eyes.
Not Wearing Sunglasses
Eye exposure to high-energy visible (HEV) rays and UV rays will age and damage your eyelids and eyes. These sunrays could lead to complications like eye cancer or cataracts. To avoid these problems, make sure you wear sunglasses whenever you go outdoors, even when the weather is overcast.
Eating an Unhealthy Diet
Your eyes need vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals to stay healthy. Keeping your body in top shape will help your eyes stay healthy as well. Eat plenty of fish, leafy greens, and fruits. Your eyes need vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc from these foods to fight common eye diseases.
Not Sleeping Enough
Everyone needs their beauty sleep. When you don’t sleep enough at night, your eyes become bloodshot and suffer with dark circles, twitching, and blurry vision. Lack of sleep could also lead to depression, weight gain, and immune system issues. Get at least seven hours of sleep every night to keep your eyes in good condition.
Not Drinking Water
Drink at least eight glasses of water every day to provide your eyes with the hydration they need. The water helps your eyes stay moist for nutrition and tear production purposes. On the other hand, dehydration could lead to puffy, red, and dry eyes. You may also need to avoid foods high in sodium that could potentially dehydrate your eyes.
Some studies suggest smokers are four times more likely to go blind compared with non-smokers. Smokers are also more susceptible to diseases like diabetic retinopathy and uveitis. Fortunately, quitting smoking immediately reduces risk of developing a severe eye condition.
Reading While Travelling
Not only could reading while travelling cause motion sickness, but it also hurts your eyes. The swaying motion causes your eyes to adjust constantly to the movement. This motion will cause eyestrain.
Looking at Electronics before Bed
The rapid change of light levels from electronics causes your eyes to work hard to process the changes. This eyestrain may cause headaches, dry eyes, or pain. This bad habit could also delay falling asleep and eventually change your sleep schedule. Avoid watching TV or playing on your smartphone right before bed.
Wearing Low-Priced Makeup
Wearing inexpensive makeup may save you a few extra dollars, but these products could cause damage to your eyes. This includes eye shadow, mascara, eyeliner, and eye creams. To prevent damage, apply mascara slightly away from the eyelash glands. Additionally, throw away your eye makeup after three months. Bacteria breeds in damp, dark places, which means your mascara bottle could develop infections after a few months. You should also remove makeup around your eyes before you go to sleep each night.
Swimming without Goggles
Swimming pools have chemicals that hurt your eyes, especially after a few hours of swimming. The chemicals cause fuzzy vision, irritation, and in severe cases, temporary loss of vision. Wear swimming goggles when you swim to protect your eyes. If you don’t have goggles, keep your eye closed under the water.
Sleeping in Your Contacts
At night, the last thing you want to do is add another routine before you go to bed. However, your eyes could get infected or experience permanent damage when you don’t take off your contacts. When you remove your contacts, make sure your hands are clean and you use plenty of contact solution.
Not Going to the Eye Doctor
The best way to reduce eye problems is to get regular eye exams. Your doctor can find early signs of vision problems and take preventative steps if necessary. If you haven’t already, schedule an annual eye exam to keep your eyes healthy.
