Colour and the Human Eyes

How Do You See Colour? Learn from Your Calgary Optometry Team
In order to understand how certain cells in your eye work to see colour, you must become familiar with all the components that make up your eyes. Read below to learn more about the different parts of your eyes and the important purpose they each serve:
● Retina – The retina is a light-sensitive lining of your eye.
● Lens – Located directly behind your pupil, the lens changes shape to allow the eye to focus light.
● Pupil – Pupils are the dark centre of your iris and are openings that allow light to enter the eye.
● Iris – The iris controls pupil dilation and the amount of light that enters your eye.
● Optic Nerve – Your optic nerve carries signals to your brain where the information is processed.

Now that you know more about the different eye components, you can continue to investigate how rods and cones ultimately help you see colour:
● Rods – Each of your eyes have over 120 million rods. They are mostly situated around the edge of the retina. Rods send black and white signals to your brain and are extremely sensitive to dim lighting. Rods are responsible for adjusting your eyes when you enter a dark room.
● Cones – Unlike rods, cones are mostly located in the middle of the retina. Each eye contains 6 million cones and interpret the colours that we see. They are also responsible for visual sharpness. Three different types of cones work together to translate long, medium, and short wavelengths of light. This information is then received by your brain and turns into the names you associate with different colours.
