How to Put in Your Contact Lenses

Putting in contact lenses might seem like a simple, mindless task but anyone who’s actually attempted it knows that this couldn’t be further from the truth. Messing up can have some pretty uncomfortable repercussions. Thankfully, here are some tips that can help you get it right from the very get-go.

Hygiene First

In terms of best practices, the most important component of putting in contact lenses is thoroughly washing your hands. This prevents the spread of bacteria that might otherwise cause eye problems, such as an infection. It’s recommended you use a non-perfumed, anti-bacterial soap. Then, to avoid getting soap in your eyes, rinse your hands thoroughly and dry them with a clean towel.

Check Your Lens
Before putting in your contact lenses, ensure that they’re not inside out. Check to see if the edges flare out by placing the lens on your fingertip and holding it up to the light. If they do, you need to reverse it. If your contact lenses have numbers on them, as some contacts do, you can verify whether or not they’re right-side-out by making sure that the numbers aren’t backwards.

Position Yourself
Using one hand, prepare your eye to receive the contact lens. Do so by gently holding your upper eyelid open with one finger and pulling your lower eyelid downwards with two fingers. You’re now ready to insert your contact lens.

Insert the Lens
With the contact lens sitting on your finger, move it slowly toward your face. While looking up, carefully apply the contact lens to your eye. Gently let go of your eyelid and let your eye close for a few seconds. This gives the contact lens a chance to settle into place. Then you can open your eye and move on to repeat the process on the other side.
