At Crowfoot Vision Centre, we strive to provide the best care for our patients. That’s why all of our eye exams include numerous diagnostic tests to thoroughly assess the health of your eye and to spot any indications of eye disease before they become a problem.

One such test is a retinal scan, and for this, we choose to use the Optos California retinal scanner. Here’s why we perform this test and why we chose this advanced device.

What’s a Retinal Scan?

The retina is a very important and complex part of your eye. It contains more than 100 million light-sensitive light cells that capture light and send signals to your brain. These signals are treated and processed to create the images you see. Your vision depends on having retinas that work.

In the early stages, retinal damage often doesn’t cause any symptoms. However, retinal scans can detect signs of damage, even if you aren’t experiencing symptoms. That’s why they’re so important: they allow your optometrist to detect and monitor eye diseases that could threaten your vision. These include:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal detachment
  • Macular degeneration
  • Certain cancers
  • Glaucoma

When caught early, all of these diseases can be treated, reducing your chances of losing your eyesight.

Why We Use the Optos California for Eye Exams

This scanner has many advantages, including:

  • It provides a bigger picture: The Optos California allows us to see up to 82 per cent of your retina at one time. This is 50 per cent more than other retinal imaging devices. This gives us a bigger and clearer view of your eye’s health.
  • It shows more: The device offers up to eight imaging functions. For patients, this means that you avoid having to go through multiple tests on different devices to have a complete eye exam.
  • It’s more comfortable: Besides being smaller than other retina imaging devices, the Optos California features motorized head and chin rests that offer more comfort for our patients, including those that require more assistance during exams.
